Niger or officially the Republic of the Niger is a landlocked country in West Africa named after the Niger River. Niger faces serious challenges to development due to its landlocked position, desert terrain, inefficient agriculture, high fertility rates without birth control, and the resulting overpopulation, the poor educational level and the poverty of its people, the lack of infrastructure, the poor health care, and the environmental degradation.
The economy is concentrated around subsistence, with some export agriculture in the more fertile south, and export of raw materials, especially uranium ore. The Niger mining industry is the main source of national exports, of which uranium is the largest export. Niger has been a uranium exporter since the 1960s and has had substantial export earnings and rapid economic growth during the 1960s and 1970s.
Niger was one of the first countries in sub-Saharan Africa to gain full Internet connectivity. Both fixed-line operators, Niger Telecom and MTN Niger offer a range of data services including ISDN, ADSL and local and international leased lines. Several Internet Service Providers are offering wireless broadband access.
